Abstract
This study aims to identify and analyze politeness strategies used by Alor peopleto address others. This research is included in descriptive qualitative research.This research applies the theory based on Brown and Levinson (1987) discussingpoliteness strategies. There are four politeness strategies studied, namely baldon-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, off record. The first Bald onrecord found 5 data showing disagreement, giving advice or advice, requesting,warning or threatening, using the imperative form. The second positive politenessfound 5 data notice attend to hearer, seeking agreement, avoiding agreement, beoptimistic, giving or asking for specific reason. The third negative politenessfound 3 data hedges, be pessimistic, apologize, the last off record found 4 datapresuppose, using tautologies, be ambiguous, be vague. The Alor people living inSurabaya use address that reflect their adaptation to the local culture and language,while still maintaining some traditional elements of Alor culture and language. Thisdemonstrates their ability to integrate into a new environment without completelygiving up their original cultural and linguistic identity. The study concludes thatpoliteness strategies in Alor addressing serve to maintain harmonious socialrelations and relationships between individuals. This study provides a deep insightinto the complexity and uniqueness of politeness strategies in Alor culture, andemphasizes the importance of understanding cultural context in the analysis oflanguage politeness.
