An Analysis of Politeness Strategy Used in “ROSI” Talkshow in The Episode of “Indonesia Darurat Utang?, Sri Mulyani Menjawab” in Kompas TV

Conversation in films or movies ortelevision programs is an example of communications which we can easily find ina real life situation. This study aims to find politeness strategies used by byRosianna Silalahi as the host and Sri Mulyani as the informant in “Rosi” Talk Show.The writer also analyze the factors that might influence the choice of strategies. Thetheory used in this thesis is Brown and Levinson’s theory (1978) that state fourstrategies : Bald on Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and OffRecord. In this research, the researcher use descriptive qualitative approach. Thedata sources of the research resulted from a video of Rosi Talkshow in episode“Indonesia Darurat Utang? Sri Mulyani Menjawab” which broadcast in KompasTV. Thursday, August 8th , 2017. The object of the study is politeness strategyconducted on pragmatic analysis found in whole utterence spoken by RosiannaSilalahi the host and Sri Mulyani Indrawati as informant.The data collected by (1) Downloading the video from youtube, (2) watching thevideo, (3) writing the transcript. The data analyzed by (1) Reading the transcription,(2) Highlighting the data that used politeness strategies, (3) Coding the data and thestrategies, (4) Inputing the data to the table, (5) Analysing the type of politenessused in data, (6) Analysing the factor influence the choose of politeness strategy,(7) Concluding. All types of strategies from Brown and Levinson theory are foundin Rosianna and Sri Mulyani utterances, but both of them mostly use positivepoliteness stategy. The are two factors that influence the choice of strategies,namely : payoff and the circumtances. Both Rosianna Silalahi and Sri Mulyani tendto consider payoffs as the reason to choose each politeness strategy. But , in thiscase, Rosianna Silalahi, also consider circumtances as the reason for choise ofstrategies because Sri Mulyani as interviwee has more power as his occupation asa Financial Minister over her. And Rosianna also combine two factors because eventhey have different power, but they also have low distance each other as theyalready knew each other.Finally, It is also hoped that the study on politeness involves language other thanEnglish; such as Javanesse or another vernacular in daily real life, so it can broadenthe knowledge in applying linguistic aspects in various languages
