Diectic Expressions Analysis on Abdullah Yusuf Ali Translation of Surah An - Nisa’ (The Woman) in Al – Quran

Al - Qur'an is written in Arabic. It means that the Quran did not descend into our mother language. Because of that it needs to translate into another language. Al Quran has been translated into many languages, especially english translation. On of the credible english translation is Abdullah Yusuf Ali. He is a South Asian Islamic scholar who translate Quran into english. There are many language use on the English Translation of Al – Quran. Therefore, it is necessary to dig learning specifically about language usage. One of them is to understand the diectic expression used in the Quran. One part of Al Quran is surah An-Nisa’ 4th chapter. The meaning of An-Nisa itself is the woman. The woman in there can be known as diectic expression that is personal deixis. This study is conducted to identify the type of deixis and reference of Surah An – Nisa ayah 01 – 35. The study uses the theory of diectic expression from George Yule to do the analysis. website The study uses descriptive qualitative method. The data is English Translation of Surah An – Nisa. The study collects the transcription of the data from http://www.streathammosque.org/uploads/quran/english-quran yusuf-ali.pdf The data are categorized into the types of deixis. The analysis of data uses rules as the pattern of analyzing deixis based on George Yule’s theory of deixis. After that, found the reference of the the data and interpreted using contextual explanation. The analysis finds that the three types of deixis based on Yule’s theory are found in Surah An – Nisa ayah 01 – 35. They are Person Deixis, Spatial Deixis and Temporal Deixis and the reference of it. The person deixis can categorize in personal reference. Spatial and temporal deixis can categorize in demonstrative reference. The study suggest to other researchers will do research about Deictic expression in Al Quran can learn, understand and complete about the use of diectic expression in another part especially in Al Quran.
