Abstract

This study aims to describe (1) the types of speech acts used by tongka(spokesperson) in the marriage process in Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT),(2) the kinds of illocutionary acts used by tongka in the marriage process inManggarai, NTT. The researcher used qualitative method and content analysis toobtain descriptive information. The data of this research are transcripts from thevideo of Anyo & Lola's Manggarai traditional marriage process which are limitedto speech acts. The video is used as data and can be viewed athttps://youtu.be/r6mXVYF4M9s?si=xXza89onq_MWiG75. The technique inanalyzing data in this study is using pragmatic analysis. This research uses Chaer'stheory of 3 types of speech acts, namely, locution, illocution, and perlocution.While the theory of Searle and Rahadi as a supporter to help the problems in thisstudy. According to them, there are five functions of illocutionary speech forms,namely, assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. In thisresearch, there are 10 types of speech acts and 15 speech act functions. The mostdominant types of speech acts are perlocution, locution, and illocution. While themost dominant kinds of illocutionary acts are, first, directive, second, assertiveand commissive, third, expressive, and the last is declaration. The reason for usingthis speech act as the dominant type of speech act is because in the sentence thespeaker has the aim of suggesting or advising the speech partner about marriedlife and trying to make the speech partner happy.
