Abstract

This study examines the translation methods used by Sendra B. Tanuwidjaya in herIndonesian translation of metaphors from Christopher Paolini's novel Eragon.Drawing on George Lakoff's metaphor theory and Hurtado Albir's translationtheory, this study seeks to define and categorize metaphor kinds, as well as toexamine the translation procedures used in translating metaphors found in thenovel. Using a descriptive qualitative technique, thisstudy examines metaphors thatcontaining phrases in both the original English text and its Indonesian translation.The study discovered 139 metaphors in the original English version on Eragonnovel by Christopher Paolini, categorized as structural metaphors with 77 instances,orientational metaphors with 15 instances, and ontological metaphors with 47instances. The most common translation styles found were literal translation whichhave been used 98 times, modulation with 37 times, which is the second mostcommon technique used in translating metaphors found the original novel andadaptation appeared 31 times which makes this the third most common translationtechniques used in translating metaphor found in original English version bychristopher paolini which means Sendra B Tanuwidjaya as the translator ofchristopher paolini novel entitled Eragon attempting to maintain the original text'sstyle, tone, and subtleties of the novel while making it accessible and entertainingfor Indonesian readers. Structural metaphors predominated in the original content,followed by ontological and orientational metaphors. This work advances the areaof literary translation by presenting theoretical insights and practicalrecommendations for future study, emphasizing the significance of a nuancedapproach to metaphor translation. Future studies should look further into thecomplexity of translating metaphors in order to improve the quality and authenticityof translated literary works.
